PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE SPIRITS VIDEO WITH ANYONE THAT MAY BE ABLE TO HELP HIM!
2/27/2010 Spirit has had a rough start. He was born in a barn. Rats ate his back feet. Even without back feet he gets around okay, as you can see in the video above. He will balance himself from time to time on his back legs. It must hurt him to do so because he only can do it for a few seconds.
Thanks to Jack and Jennifer D. we have wheels for him to use. We are now trying to provide additional opportunities for him to get around. It is our goal to get him prosthetic feet to use when he is not in his wheels. We are working with Dr. Fucci's Veterinary Rehabilitation and Wellness Center. She is in contact with a local group that will help us with getting him fitted for the new feet. Dr. Fucci believes he is an excellent candidate due to the condition of his stumps.
He loves to play outside. He loves other dogs. With the new wheels he will be able to take longer walks and play outside. With his prosthetic feet he will be able to play with the other dogs longer and hopefully get along better.
We need your help to raise the funds for his feet!!! At the Mutt March we raised $330.00. Other donations include $100.00 from Linda M. , $75.00 from Tracy L, and $250.00 from Shelly A. For a total of $750.00. We are well on our way to one of the feet. We estimate the cost will be approximately $3000.00 for both feet plus rehabilitation for him to use them.
Please help us make Spirit's life better. I will continue to keep this post current with updates to let you follow his journey.
March 7, 2010 Update
Spirit had his neutered done on Tuesday. He is a little bit sore but doing well. We had to suspend his wheel training until he is healed from surgery. X-rays were taken at that time.
Spirit and the Florida Doggie Paws gang were at "Bark in the Park" yesterday. Spirit won the hearts of everyone that attended. We raised an additional $167.00 for his new feet. Thank you to everyone that donated at the event. Thank you to Barbara A. (all the way from Virginia) who donated $25.00 towards Spirit. We now have a total of $942.00.
If you are interested in adopting Spirit please fill out an adoption form. Thank you for checking in and I will continue to keep you up to date on his progress. Thanks for your support.
3/16/2010 Spirit will be going in next week to have a cast put on his back leg in order to begin the process of casting for the mold for his foot. Dr. Fucci will be doing this on Tuesday. I will keep you posted. Thank you to Diane C. and Gibson Truck for each donating $100.00. Total now $1,142.00
May 15 2010 There was a tennis tournament sponsored by Mary Sieferd and Jan Hudgins at Buckhorn Tennis Club in Brandon, held to raise funds for Spirit's new paws, was a great success. They raised approximately $2,200 and money is still coming in. Even though it was very hot, approximately 30 animal lovers came out, played in the heat and made generous donations to our cause. The courts were donated by the Buckhorn Tennis Club too and we really appreciate them and their generous donation to Spirit's cause! Spirit was a huge hit with all of them, of course! And, he really won the hearts of Mary and Jan who really put so much time and effort in to putting this event on. Thanks again to everyone for playing, donating and putting out so much effort to make this sweet boys "feet" a reality
June 21, 2010..... Spirit is doing well. He is in a home that will soon be his forever home. At this point the new mom is considered foster mom until we can get Spirit fitted for his new paws. Last weekend his new mom put him in the pool (with a life vest) to swim. He was assisted by his mom and he did very well. Spirit has had an appointment with Dr. Fucci's office last month. They placed hard plastic castings of his legs. It is important to have these fit correctly so that we can get a good foot made. Adjustments needed to be made. We are waiting for the new castings. I will keep you posted.
July 16, 2010 Today Spirit was fitted for the first time with his new back feet. If you can picture hard plastic that snaps together covering each lower leg. A rubber stopper (like the kind on the bottom of a walking cane or crutches). It took about all of 5 minutes before he really became comfortable with them. He certainly is a smart boy! The plastic part was a little bit too tight and they need to add about 2 inches to make them taller for him. They have been sent back for re-sizing. As soon as we get the final pair we will have pictures and video placed up for all to see! Thank you EVERYONE for your thoughts, prayers and wonderful donations. Looks like it won't be long before our boy is running with the big dogs. He looked so happy. I can't wait for his final ones to come in!!! Highlighted Dogs
